Feel the Spirit: SLS Celebrates Spirit Week

As the end of October approaches, the students of St. Lawrence Seminary find themselves enjoying the new routines of crisp air and shorter days, and many find themselves looking forward to the annual spirit week celebrations.

Each year, students are engaged in activities and friendly competition meant to build up the camaraderie of fraternities and engage the entire student body in some fun. The faculty and staff organize an assortment of events for students to take part in during the day and after school.

The week begins with members of each fraternity carving pumpkins, making pizzas, and decorating cookies. The pizzas and cookies are saved for the end of the week parties. Students also compete in their fraternities in games of capture the flag and a video game tournament.

By mid-week, students and faculty engage in dress up days, which this year included sports day, pajama day, and Halloween costumes. It’s always exciting to see who’s supporting which sports team (soccer jerseys seemed to predominate), who’s got the wackiest pajamas around (one-pieces won the day), and who’s going to outdo the others in their costumes (it was a toss-up…there were so many good ones).

As the end of the week arrives, that doesn’t mean the fun has to end. On Friday night, the students take part in an outdoor pumpkin hunt, bonfire, and cookies and cocoa to warm up with in the refectory. And Saturday is the ultimate celebration. Scary movies play all day. The haunted house is designed and hosted by the senior class and all of the students get a chance to experience the thrills and laughs. And it all ends with a social hosted by the juniors with games and a skit.

SLS doesn’t have a homecoming celebration, but spirit week is a good replacement. From taking part in friendly competition, to enjoying some days out of dress code, to building friendships among fraternity members, the week is a special one for students on the Hill.
